What the NCAA announced
The June 23 Division I announcement describes an age-based period of eligibility, full implementation for fall 2027 entrants and transition treatment for specified athletes in 2026–27. It also identifies limited exceptions. This replaces the earlier version of this article, which presented an expected timeline and overly broad statements about who could benefit.
Division matters
The NCAA also published a Division II adoption announcement. Do not assume one division’s transition instructions answer another division’s eligibility question. Ask the school which current legislation, transition provision and any applicable case-specific decision govern the athlete.
Bring a timeline to the school
Prepare first full-time enrollment, prior schools, competition history and relevant interruptions or prior determinations. Ask which facts the school needs; keep private documents in the school’s appropriate process. A clear timeline helps the responsible staff identify the governing provision without relying on the shorthand “5-for-5.”
Keep three decisions separate
The length of an eligibility period, permission to compete in a particular season and the terms of an NIL project are separate questions. An additional opportunity to compete is not a guaranteed roster place, scholarship or sponsor payment. Avoid signing a campaign based on an assumed season until the actual eligibility and scheduling questions are resolved.

Ask: Which model applies to me? What is my documented eligibility period? Which transition or exception provision is relevant? Who certifies the answer? What remains unresolved?
