How to Give Useful Feedback on Your First Merch Proof

Useful merch proof feedback identifies the file version, exact location, requested change and priority. Review spelling, placement and legibility separately so the designer can act without guessing.

An annotated proof review process

Fictional shirt proof showing three review targets: exact name spelling, artwork placement beneath the collar, and legibility of the smallest text.
Fictional proof diagram. Number the locations in your own proof and connect each number to one specific comment. Diagram dimensions are not production specifications.
Replace vague reactions with actionable comments
Vague feedback Useful replacement
“Make it pop.” “The small line is hard to read on the dark garment. Please show a higher-contrast option at the intended print size.”
“The placement is weird.” “In proof v2, the design appears low relative to the collar. Please state the placement measurement and show the proposed alternative.”
“Wrong name.” “The surname in callout 1 should read [exact spelling]. This is required before approval.”
“Can we try everything?” “Please show these two changes in v3; keep the remaining layout unchanged so we can compare.”

A screen mockup cannot prove physical color, texture or final print placement. Ask how those details are confirmed for the product and production method. Do not enlarge a screenshot and treat its pixels as a reliable measurement. Keep one consolidated feedback note so separate messages do not create contradictory instructions.

Before you finish

  • Read every letter against your original brief.
  • Separate must-fix errors from optional preferences.
  • Identify the exact final proof version when approving.
